utopia with an E - delineating the missing film genre
Sound rescued by Sebastian Six
Created for the virtual exhibition ' WHEN THE WORLD IS SICK, CAN SOMEONE BE WELL?' curated by Jianan Qu
for Fluc in Vienna, Austria, December 2020.
I made this video for a performance evening about trying to be positive at the end of 2020, called WHEN THE WORLD IS SICK, CAN SOMEONE BE WELL? curated by Jianan Qu at Fluc, Vienna, which had to go online because of Covid19.
The film is based on an article I wrote for the Open Library of Humanities called Delineating the Missing Film Genre: Eutopia. The film also incorporates elements I created for a TEDx talk that I did in Linz in 2019, for an event called Utopia:The Golden Age, which couldn't be put online because of all the found footage I used (oops).
It combines elements from my practice in a playful manner to try to encourage creators to address the genre (eutopia).
The video includes footage or stills from various well known movies, listed here in order of appearance:
2001 A Space Odyssey by Stanley Kubrick
Avatar by James Cameron
Black Panther by Ryan Coogler
Tomorrowland by Brad Bird
Ready Player One by Steven Spielberg
Interstellar by Christopher Nolan
Hail Cesar by the Coen Brothers
Bladerunner 2049 by Denis Villeneuve
2001 A Space Odyssey by Stanley Kubrick (again)
The video also contains reference to the televisions series Friends and Modern Family, and the book Utopia by Thomas More.
